The Sunrise Police Canine Unit consists of six dog teams (One Sergeant and five Officers) and their primarily function is to patrol high crime area. Respond to calls where the capability of the dog may be used. (Alarm call, open doors, in-progress calls, missing person(s)/ children, evidence searches, etc.
Five of the dog teams are trained and certified in patrol work. These five teams are also cross-trained in one additional specific area. (narcotics detection, explosive detection, and currency detection) The sixth team is a single purpose team that does narcotics detection only.
The dog teams work various days and hours allowing for a dog team to be in-service nearly 24-hours a day, seven days a week. All of the canine teams are "on-call" 24/7. The canine teams are assigned to the Uniform-Patrol, but assist other specialized units as well (SWAT, Detective Division, and VIN).
The Canine Unit routinely works with outside agencies to include: US Customs, DEA, Palm Beach Sheriff's Office, US Postal Service, FBI, Secret Service, ATF, and other local agencies who do not have a Canine Unit.
The Sunrise Police Canine Unit conducts training "in-house" and also invites outside agencies to participate. Two of the Sunrise Officers are State certified canine trainers, and one is a State evaluator.
All of the canine teams attend a 400-hour canine academy and must pass the State certification course before being permitted to work. All canine teams certify annually.
