Home MenuWater Service Lines
Water service lines are the pipes that bring water from a water main into a home or building.
In our community, the Sunrise Utilities Department owns and maintains the portion of the service line that extends from the water main in the street to the outside meter. Utilities customers own and maintain the portion of the service line that extends from the meter into their home or building.
Water Service Line Inventory Program
In 1991, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published the Lead and Copper Rule—a regulation developed to monitor and reduce lead and copper in our nation’s drinking water.
The EPA has updated this rule over the years. Notably, in 2021, the Agency’s Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR) initiated requirements that all 60,000+ public water systems in the U.S. must comply with by October 16, 2024.
Under the LCRR, all public water systems—including the City of Sunrise Utilities Department—are required to:
- Develop an inventory of their water service line materials and publish it online;
- Establish a replacement plan for any lead service lines, as well as galvanized service lines requiring replacement and service lines made of unknown material; and
- Update/expand sampling locations based on new EPA criteria.
The goal of the LCRR is to achieve 100% lead service line replacement over the next 10 years, nationwide.
The City of Sunrise Utilities Department is committed to providing our customers with clean, safe water that meets or exceeds all state and federal standards. While we are confident that there are no lead service lines connected to our public water system, we are complying with the LCRR—as we comply with all regulatory requirements.
