Call 9-1-1 for Gas Leaks

In the event of a gas leak or gas odor, leave the building immediately, move at least 100 feet away, and then call 9-1-1.

A potential gas leak is an emergency, and you should not use alternate communication methods to report it. Please refer to the extended tips below for more details in situations where you smell gas:

Inside a Home or Building 

  • Strong Odor or hissing sound of escaping gas 
    • LEAVE THE BUILDING IMMEDIATELY - get everyone out quickly
    • DO NOT attempt to find the gas leak 
    • DO NOT use a telephone or cell phone
    • DO NOT turn any electrical switches on or off 
    • DO NOT unplug any electrical cords 
    • DO NOT start or move any vehicles 
    • DO NOT smoke or light any matches or use a lighter  
    • Move at least 100 feet from the building, call 9-1-1
    • Remain a safe distance from the building, but do not leave the area. 
    • Keep everyone away from the building until given the all clear.
  • Faint odor that comes and goes 
    • Open windows and doors to vent the area 
    • If in the kitchen, check that all the knobs on the cooking appliance(s) are in the OFF position
    • Call the Gas Division at 954-572-2299 (select Option 3), or 9-1-1

 Outside 

  • Call the Gas Division at 954-572-2299 (select Option 3), or 9-1-1
  • Do not attempt to find the source of the odor
  • Do not attempt to shut off any valves or or meters
  • If you see blowing dirt or hear a hissing sound, stay clear of the area. Keep everyone away.
