Reuse water service is coming soon to the Sunrise Utilities service area!Reuse Water Purple Pipe at Sawgrass Plant

The City of Sunrise has made significant progress toward promoting resiliency in water supply by expanding opportunities in alternative sources with the Sunrise Reuse Water program.

The goals set for the reuse program are to continue expansion of Million Gallons per Day distributed (MGD) to 2 MGD by 2025, 4 MGD by 2030, and 8 MGD by 2050. The City has completed construction of 0.99 MGD of reuse water treatment at our Southwest Wastewater Treatment Plant in 2014 and completed the construction of 2 MGD of reuse facility at Sawgrass Wastewater Treatment Plant in 2019.

The reuse program will target large users which are primarily using water sources for irrigation near the City’s Biscayne Aquifer wellfields. The City is currently installing the pipelines that will distribute the reuse to large open spaces where owners have surface water or groundwater use permits.

What is reuse water?

Reuse water is highly treated wastewater, which we can reclaim for irrigation and other uses to extend our water supplies. Up to 50% of our drinking water in South Florida is used for irrigation. We could replace much of this with reuse water.

Benefits of Sunrise Reuse

  • Conservation of our potable (drinking) water supply, by reducing dependency on potable water for irrigation purposes
  • Less expensive than potable water as it is typically subsidized by Utilities at $0.73 per 1,000 gallons
  • High-quality water source for irrigating landscaping (tertiary treated)
  • Reduces fertilizer use, as some nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus remain in reclaimed water
  • Reduces stress on drinking water supplies and helps meet future demands
  • Helps prevent/reduce salt water intrusion into the drinking water wells
  • Helps to postpone costly drinking water process expansions due to reduced demands
  • There is no irrigation restrictions for reuse water
