A Message from the Chief
The City of Sunrise Fire-Rescue Department has been proudly serving the residents, visitors, and business owners since it became a career fire-rescue agency in 1972. While the primary mission has always been life safety, incident stabilization, and property conservation, Sunrise Fire-Rescue is truly an all-hazards, community risk-reduction service delivery system, comprised of 168 highly-trained operations personnel working to serve our community.
We are proud of our history, having first started as a volunteer fire department in 1967, serving what was then called Sunrise Golf Village. A few years later, the City of Sunrise became the first fully-paid, combined Fire-Rescue department – deploying both firefighters and paramedica – in Western Broward County. In the mid-1980s, Sunrise Fire-Rescue began providing specialized operations – hazardous materials, technical rescue, and dive-rescue – and today is one of only four teams in Broward County responsible for regional response to the specialized emergency incidents. In addition, several of our personnel participate in a variety of specialized assignments that have that have them respond to both state and national emergency incidents in times of declared disasters.
However, having said that, our real strength is in the quality and characteristics of our diverse work force that truly believe in serving our community disasters.
Whether you are a resident, business owner, visitor, or someone just interested in learning about our Fire-Rescue department, please do not hesitate to contact our agency or myself directly for anything you may need.
John K. McNamara, Fire Chief
