Environmental stewardship is a pillar for our Sunrise Utilities which operates a robust water efficiency and conservation program, and helps to lead the City’s sustainability efforts:

  • Certifying our facilities - the water and wastewater treatment plants, Gas division building, and Utility Administration Center as wildlife habitatsUtilities Staff pose by the new butterfly garden and certified habitat at the Utilities Administrative Center
  • Prioritizing bee relocation rather than extermination, saving over 300,000 bees
  • Promoting resiliency in water supply by expanding opportunities in alternative water sources such as the Sunrise Reuse Water program and committing to investment in the C-51 Reservoir Project in support of the regional water supply project
  • Transitioning to a greener fleet - Utilities was the first Sunrise department to have an electric vehicle and charging station for City FleetThe City's first Electric Fleet Vehicle and Charging Station at Sunrise Utilities
  • Converting street lighting and exterior lighting to LED citywide in a phased approach through our Public Works Division
  • Designing for solar photovoltaic system on new water treatment plant building, will be the first rooftop solar array on a City facility in Sunrise
  • Upgrading flush/flow fixtures like automatic water flushing devices at 20 hydrants throughout the City’s water distribution system which improve water quality while saving approximately 10 million gallons of water per year
  • Analyzing energy data through EnergyStar Portfolio Manager
  • Purchasing leak detection equipment (sounding devices and correlators) and digital loggers in order to better identify and resolve existing leaks within the water distribution system - reducing unaccounted-for water (previously at 15%) to now under 10%
  • Investing in infiltration and inflow reduction improvements to reduce flows like rain and ground water that seeps into the sanitary sewer systems that must be treated and disposed

Community Outreach Programs

A water conservation, efficiency education and outreach program can help water consumers make sound choices and preserve water resources for the future.
