Currently, there are more than 5,200 active business tax receipts in the City of Sunrise. Business tax receipts are renewed on an annual basis for all businesses located in the City, including authorized home-based businesses. Business owners planning to operate in the city must apply for a business tax receipt prior to conducting business.

To avoid late penalties, business tax receipts must be renewed on or before September 30th of each year. A delinquency penalty of 10% is added to the business tax portion of your invoice in the month of October, plus an additional 5% penalty for each month of delinquency thereafter:

        • October 1, a 10% penalty will apply.
        • November 1, a 15% penalty will apply.
        • December 1, a 20% penalty will apply.
        • January 1, a 25% penalty will apply.

Any person who engages in or manages any business, occupation, or profession without obtaining a local business tax receipt may be subject to a 25% penalty of the business tax receipt fee, including the business tax receipt due and any other penalty provided by law or in the City Code.

Any person who engages in any business, occupation, or profession covered by this chapter, who does not pay the required local business tax within 150 days after the initial notice of tax due, and who does not obtain the required local business tax receipt is subject to civil actions and penalties, including court costs, reasonable attorneys' fees, additional administrative costs incurred as a result of collection efforts, and a penalty of up to two hundred fifty dollars ($250.00).
