The City of Sunrise has already committed more than $25 Million in improvements to the east Sunrise area. Continue reading to learn more about the recently completed, current, and future projects.
Recently Completed
Complete Streets: The City’s original Complete Streets project was implemented on Sunset Strip from University Drive to Sunrise Boulevard. New traffic circles with beautiful landscaping and space for future public art are located at NW 64th Avenue and NW 19th Street. Enhancements included modifying the existing four-lane road section down to a two-lanes with bicycle lanes and buffers in each direction, and installing new eight-foot-wide sidewalks with ADA connections at intersections, as well as decorative crosswalks, decorative pedestrian lighting, landscaping improvements and drainage improvements.
City Park Renovation: City Park in the heart of original Sunrise was completely renovated. The project included the construction of three new covered basketball courts; a new playground and splash pad; a new multipurpose field; renovation of the two existing tennis courts; installation of a permanent amphitheater for City events; walking paths; an expanded parking lot; and purchase and renovation of multiple storefronts in a commercial building for use as program space.
Roarke Hall Improvements: The existing lakeside facility included a meeting hall, a free-form pool, and restrooms. During the project, the pool was resurfaced and a 2,500-square-foot splash pad was constructed. Improvements also included additional parking spaces, renovation of the restrooms and interior floor surfaces, replacement of the air conditioning system, replacement of the roof, installation of impact-resistant windows, upgraded landscaping, and cameras and emergency call boxes for increased security. The City is also excited to share that the revitalized Roarke Hall is now home to the Gary Wendt Teen Center, the first new Teen Center operated by the Boys and Girls Club of Broward County in more than 20 years!
Village Beach Club Improvements: The existing facility featured a free-form pool and restrooms. During the renovation project, the restrooms were upgraded, hurricane protection was enhanced, and the air conditioning systems, fence, and monument sign were replaced. In addition, the parking lot lighting was upgraded with new LED fixtures, the drinking fountain was replaced, and the landscaping was modified.
Street Lighting Upgrades: Recently, the City partnered with Florida Power and Light (FP&L) to convert more than six hundred (600) existing High Pressure Sodium (HPS) street light fixtures to Light Emitting Diode (LED) street light fixtures throughout the east Sunrise communities. The conversion is at no up- front cost to the City and will provide energy savings.
Traffic Control Boxes Art Wrap: The City of Sunrise did a call for artist to select artworks/designs that can be reproduced as vinyl wraps and applied to up to 29 utility boxes throughout Sunrise. The goal of the project is to enhance Sunrise’s public spaces by adding works of art by local artists to utilitarian surfaces that are in high visibility areas and/or are often targeted by vandalism. These pieces of public art can enhance the visual character of our city, promote community dialogue, turn ordinary spaces into community landmarks, and are accessible to everyone.
Nearing/Under Construction
Village Art Plaza: This project--which began in late 2022--will create a public space in the Village Center area of Sunset Strip that connects the Village Civic Center and City Park. The plaza will be home to public art pieces as well as providing space for farmer’s markets, festivals, and similar public gatherings. This new plaza will have a unique paving surface that will help identify and define the space and will also include removable bollards allowing for easy street closure at NW 68th Avenue.

In addition to the properties above there are other public and private sites that are ripe for redevelopment. Please view the opportunity sites map highlighted in the Master Plan.
Residential Landscaping Program: Eligible residents that complete an application will be able to receive up to two (2) trees planted in the front yard (or side for corner lots). The tree species will be limited to a select group to include a variety of ten different species depending on availability. Owners who participate in the Program will not be required to obtain a landscape permit, as the application for the Program will serve as the permit. The selected landscape contractor will deliver and install trees to eligible Owners. The City will be responsible for paying the contractor and coordinating tree selection and installation with the contactor. The Owners shall maintain the trees and will be held responsible for problems occurring after the trees have been planted, such as lack of water, improper maintenance or damage from lawn equipment.
