Calls for Artist Entries
The City of Sunrise, Florida has presented wide-ranging opportunities for local, regional, and national artists to submit artwork intended for display in our City. These calls for artist entries have included art wraps that beautify traffic control boxes as well as sculptures, and we're excited to offer future opportunities to expand public art in Sunrise.

In October 2024, the City of Sunrise, Florida is seeking to commission artists—or teams of artists—to loan existing art sculpture(s) to the City of Sunrise to be exhibited outdoors for one-year. There are a total of thirteen (13) art pads that will be available for the art sculpture exhibition, including up to four (4) at the Flamingo Linear Park, located along Flamingo Road between Panther Parkway and West Oakland Park Boulevard, and up to nine (9) at the new Village Art Plaza, located at 2260 NW 68th Avenue.
Artists with prospective entries are invited to apply to the the call for entry, which asks them to consider designs that represent the City as a dynamic and welcoming community that appreciates and celebrates its diverse people and culture, while embracing smart growth and development.
The Call to Artists will generally be awarded to the Artists or Artist teams whose designs are selected by the Committee and submitted to the City Commission with a recommendation of approval. The selected Artists or Artist teams will be expected to enter into an agreement with the City for the loan of the artwork in the amount of $3,500 for selected sculptures that are between 5 to 8 feet tall and $4,000 for selected sculptures that are higher than 8 feet tall.
In April 2024, the City of Sunrise, Florida sought to commission artists—or teams of artists—to create up to three (3) professional murals to be prominently displayed in the Village Art Plaza, located on Sunset Strip in Sunrise, Florida. Artists with prospective entries were invited to apply to the the call for entry, which asked them to consider designs that represent the City’s identity, which is a warm and inviting environment that celebrates and embraces a diverse and culturally rich population. The Art Plaza is located on Sunset Strip which is the major thoroughfare in eastern Sunrise, and is part of the City’s original neighborhoods.
The design’s theme(s) were open to the artist’s vision, but since the murals are within the Village Art Plaza the main inspiration/theme should be ART! The design must be family-friendly and suitable for the public realm and capture the interest of those that drive, ride, and walk by.
The East Sunrise Improvements Master Plan, adopted in March of 2019, is a roadmap for reinvestment in the original Sunrise neighborhoods. Since the adoption of the Plan, the City has been heavily investing on and working to attract investment and redevelopment through initiatives like public art.
In December 2023, the City of Sunrise, Florida sought to commission artists—or teams of artists—to create up to twenty-two (22) professional paintings and/or photography to be prominently displayed in the interior of Sunrise’s new City Hall building, located at 10770 West Oakland Park Boulevard, Sunrise, FL 33351. Artists with prospective entries were invited to apply to the the call for entry, which asked them to consider themes that that are inspired by South Florida’s Nature and Wildlife, with a strong focus on the Everglades.
Due to the City’s proximity to the Everglades, conference rooms within City Hall are also named after local nature and wildlife. Examples include Everglades, Oasis, Tortoise, Cypress, Panther, Osprey, Sawgrass, Monarch, Orange Blossom, Hibiscus, Oak, Sabal Palm, Pelican, Palmetto, Flamingo, Manatee, Jacaranda, Royal Palm, Spoonbill, Alligator, and Blue Heron.
The Call to Artists will generally be awarded to the Artists or Artist teams whose designs are selected by the Committee and submitted to the City Commission with a recommendation of approval. The selected Artists or Artist teams will be expected to enter into an agreement with the City for the artwork in an amount between $200 to $500 per digital photography and giclee or between $1,000 to $3,000 per original painting. The City will be responsible for the framing and installation of the final works.
In June 2023, the City of Sunrise, Florida sought to commission an artist—or team of artists—to create an interactive sculpture inspired by the “Upside-Down House,” a historic landmark that brought visitors from around the world to Sunrise in the 1960s. This sculpture will be located in the City’s Village Art Plaza currently under construction, located at 2260 NW 68 Avenue. Artists with prospective entries were invited to apply to the the call for entry, which asked them to consider a level of interactivity that lets the observer become part of the artwork in some way.

The Call to Artists was expected to be conducted in two (2) phases. In the first phase, up to three (3) Artists will be shortlisted by the Selection Committee based on experience, credentials, style and previous work. In the second phase, each shortlisted Artist will receive a $1,500.00 stipend for the development of a detailed proposal with conceptual design options for the interactive sculpture.
The Call to Artists will generally be awarded to the responsive and responsible Artist or Artist team whose design is selected by the Committee and submitted to the City Commission with a recommendation of approval. The selected Artist or Artist team will be expected to enter into an agreement with the City for the sculpture in an amount not to exceed $145,000.00. The selected Artist or Artist team will be responsible for the creation and installation of the final work. One large 16’ diameter (150’ sq. ft.) concrete art pad to grade with electricity will be provided by the City.
In May 2023, the City of Sunrise, Florida sought to commission an artist—or team of artists—to create two vibrant sculptures to be located at the entrance to the City's Village Art Plaza! Artists with prospective entries were invited to apply to the the call for entry, which asked them to consider the spirit of the City and create a vibrant sculpture that welcomes people into the plaza.
The East Sunrise Improvements Master Plan, adopted in March of 2019, is a roadmap for reinvestment in the original Sunrise neighborhoods. Since the adoption of the Plan, the City has been heavily investing on and working to attract investment and redevelopment through initiatives like public art.
The Call to Artists will generally be awarded to the responsive and responsible Artist or Artist team whose design is selected by the Committee and submitted to the City Commission with a recommendation of approval. The selected Artist or Artist team will be expected to enter into an agreement with the City for both entryway sculptures in an amount not to exceed $75,000.00. The selected Artist or Artist team will be responsible for the creation and installation of the final work. Two (2) 5-foot x 5-foot concrete art pads with electricity for the entryway sculptures into the plaza will be provided by the City.
In March 2023, the City of Sunrise, Florida sought to commission an artist—or team of artists—to create a vibrant sculpture to be located at 1200 Sunset Strip, a major thoroughfare in eastern Sunrise which is part of the City’s original neighborhoods! Artists with prospective entries were invited to apply to the the call for entry, which asked them to consider the diversity of Sunrise and present a unique vision inspired by Caribbean culture.
The East Sunrise Improvements Master Plan, adopted in March of 2019, is a roadmap for reinvestment in the original Sunrise neighborhoods. Since the adoption of the Plan, the City has been heavily investing on and working to attract investment and redevelopment through initiatives like public art. This project will be the first major art sculpture in eastern Sunrise, in close proximity to the upcoming Village Art Plaza.
The Call to Artists was expected to be conducted in two (2) phases. In the first phase, up to three (3) Artists will be shortlisted by the Selection Committee based on experience, credentials, style and previous work. In the second phase, each shortlisted Artist will receive a $1,000.00 stipend for the development of a detailed proposal with up to three conceptual design options. City staff and the City’s art consultant may engage the community on the shortlisted proposals to provide input to the Selection Committee.
The Call to Artists will generally be awarded to the responsive and responsible Artist whose design is selected by the Committee and submitted to the City Commission with a recommendation of approval. The selected Artist will be expected to enter into an agreement with the City in an amount not to exceed $72,000.00. The selected Artist will be responsible for the creation and installation of the final work.
In September 2022, the City of Sunrise commissioned artists to submit designs that could be reproduced as vinyl wraps and applied to traffic control boxes throughout Sunrise. As a result of the call for artists' entries, an additional 15 artworks were installed on traffic control boxes in our City.
The goal of the project was to showcase designs that represent the City of Sunrise’s identity, which is a warm and inviting environment that celebrates and embraces a diverse and culturally rich population, while also enhancing Sunrise’s public spaces by adding vibrant works of art to utilitarian surfaces that are in high visibility areas. These pieces of public art are accessible to everyone, and are intended to enhance the visual character of our city, promote community dialogue, and turn ordinary spaces into community landmarks.
In March 2022, the City of Sunrise commissioned an artist (or team of artists) to create up to two sculptures of significant size and quality to be located on the Flamingo Road Linear Park. Artists with prospective entries were invited to apply in advance of the March 25, 2022 deadline.
This prominent location of these sculptures will serve as a gateway feature to the City of Sunrise Business and Entertainment District. This four-square-mile area is located on the west side of the City of Sunrise from Flamingo Road to the Sawgrass Expressway neighboring the Everglades.
The Business and Entertainment District includes the largest and most successful outlet and value retail mall in the continental United States - Sawgrass Mills. Across from the mall there is also the 20,000 seat FLA Live Arena, one of the finest arenas in the country and home to the National Hockey League’s Florida Panthers.
Another major asset in western Sunrise is the Sawgrass International Corporate Park, one of Florida’s largest corporate parks (650 acres) home to regional, Latin American, and global headquarters. There is also over $2.3 billion new mixed-use projects in development within this area.
Because of these assets, this area hosts more than 28 million visitors each year from all over the world and it is known as a major business and entertainment destination.
Artists were asked to keep in mind that each sculpture should:
- Reflect the spirit of Sunrise and be impactful to pedestrians and passerby traffic both day and night at this high-traffic roadway.
- Represents Sunrise's changing community and depict the City’s mission.
- Be capable of “holding its own” and making a dramatic statement.
- Be durable and require minimal ongoing maintenance in South Florida's sub-tropical climate, which is hot and humid with an intense sun and seasonal heavy rain.
- Generally meet the City's preference of using unique elements, having significant height, being optionally kinetic or lit, having vibrant colors, and avoiding water features.
The Call to Artists is expected to be conducted in two (2) phases. In the first phase, up to three (3) Artists per sculpture will be shortlisted by the Selection Committee based on experience, credentials, style and previous work. In the second phase, each shortlisted Artist will receive a $1,500 stipend for the development of a detailed proposal.
The Call to Artists will generally be awarded to the responsive and responsible Artist who scores the highest number of points for the applicable sculpture. The selected Artist(s) will be expected to enter into an agreement with the City in an amount not to exceed $125,000 per sculpture. The selected Artist(s) will be responsible for the creation and installation of the final work. As determined to be in the City’s best interests, one Artist may be selected for both sculptures or different Artists may be selected for each sculpture.

In July 2021, the City of Sunrise commissioned artists to submit designs that could be reproduced as vinyl wraps and applied to traffic control boxes in the Sunrise Business and Entertainment District. As a result of the call for artists' entries, 17 additional artworks were installed on traffic control boxes.
The goal of the project was to showcase designs that help brand the western portion of the City of Sunrise as a business and entertainment destination and the best place to live, work and play, while also enhancing Sunrise’s public spaces by adding vibrant works of art to utilitarian surfaces that are in high visibility areas. These pieces of public art are accessible to everyone, and are intended to enhance the visual character of our city, promote community dialogue, and turn ordinary spaces into community landmarks.

As a result of the call for artists' entries, 29 artworks were installed on traffic control boxes in East and Central Sunrise neighborhoods.
