City of Sunrise Recycling Update

Post Date:07/06/2018 12:00 PM
The City of Sunrise is actively working to find a new contractor to process the recyclable materials collected from our residents. Due in part to shrinking worldwide recycling markets and in part to the consolidation of Broward-based recycling facilities under a single company, local cities are struggling to find affordable and responsible ways to dispose of these materials.

Sunrise is currently delivering its recyclables to the nearby waste-to-energy plant, where they are converted into electricity. However, we are actively in discussions with recycling companies inside and outside of Broward and we expect to have a new recyclables processing contract in place soon.

During this transition period, Sunrise residents should continue to sort recyclable items into their blue single-stream bins and place the bins curbside on regularly-scheduled collection days.

Sunrise is a leader among Broward County governments in working toward regional solutions that will address our solid waste and recycling needs for generations to come. We are committed to developing sustainable facilities that will maximize our ability to recycle locally, including processing techniques that create markets for as many types of materials as possible.
