Join the Good and Green Team for a Guided Nature Walk of Oak Hammock Park!
Oak Hammock Park is an Emerald Award-winning park, and a certified wildlife habitat through National Wildlife Federation. You'll be led along the nature trails while learning about the many plants and animals found throughout the park - and can help to document them for science! Bring your smart phone so you can participate by taking photos and uploading observations using the iNaturalist app (although this is not required to participate). This is part of the City Nature Challenge South Florida in partnership with UF IFAS.
Meet at 10:00 AM at the Informational Kiosk (download the Oak Hammock Park Map).
No experience necessary, become a citizen scientist!
Nature walk will be led by:
- Dr. Corey T. Callaghan, Assistant Professor of Global Ecology, Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation at the University of Florida. Corey has over 10,000 observations logged and uses iNaturalist data to answer questions about urban biodiversity @coreytcallaghan.
- Dr. Derric Tay, a member of the Sunrise Sustainability Advisory Board, is a Habitat Steward with the National Wildlife Federation, certified Florida Master Naturalist, and Sunrise Good and Green Ambassador. He has a PhD in environmental science and public policy. Derric is an avid iNaturalist user.
- Nataly Miguez, a former UF/IFAS ecology researcher with a Bachelor of Science in Geography with a minor in Sustainability. Nataly is currently the City of Sunrise’s Sustainability intern.
You can also participate from home. Download a copy of the Backyard "Bingo" and see what you can find in your own backyard or neighborhood. You can get a Certificate of Participation from UF!
