Get Involved! Apply to Serve on an Advisory Board

Are you a civic-minded resident who would like to become involved with your local government? Do you have knowledge and expertise in specific areas? Serve on a City board!

There is one vacancy on each of the following boards, and applications will be accepted until the positions are filled:

Affordable Housing Advisory Board. This board reviews all matters related to recommending monetary and non-monetary incentives and strategies for affordable housing. Members are required to represent one of the following sectors: affordable housing builders, bankers, labor, for-profit and non-profit providers, low-income persons, City employers, realtors, essential services personnel, the local planning agency, and the City. (The current vacancy is for a City employer.) The board meets quarterly.

Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board. This board recommends initiatives meant to encourage bicycling and walking throughout the City, including but not limited to creating plans and developing linkages for the possible inclusion and/or placement of bicycle and pedestrian facilities throughout the City, along with other associated responsibilities to meet that objective. The board meets on the second Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m.

Board of Adjustment. This board reviews applications for zoning variances and makes recommendations regarding the applications to City staff. The board meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m.

Economic Development Advisory Board. This board serves in an advisory capacity in matters pertaining to economic development in the City. Responsibilities may include: cooperating with other governmental agencies and civic groups in the advancement of economic development; recommending policies, procedures and philosophies on economic development; advising on the development of long-range economic development planning; and aiding in coordinating economic development programs with the programs of other governmental agencies and voluntary organizations. The board meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. 

Leisure Services Advisory Board. This board serves in an advisory capacity in matters pertaining to parks and recreation. Responsibilities may include: recommending policies, procedures and philosophies on recreation services; advising on concerns and priorities of development of recreation areas, facilities, programs and services; advising on the development of long-range capital improvements; evaluating the effectiveness of parks and recreation facilities; and helping communicate the policies and functions of the Leisure Services Department to the public. The board meets on the Monday of the first full week of the month at 6:00 p.m.

Sunrise Historical Commission. This commission collects, arranges, records and preserves historical material and data, including books, pamphlets, maps, charts, manuscripts, family histories, U.S. census records, papers and other objects and material illustrative of and relating to the history of the City. In addition, the commission procures and preserves narratives of early residents, and collects material of every description relative to the history and schools and churches in Sunrise. The commission meets on the second Monday of each month at 4:00 p.m.
